FAMILY SUPPORT ASSISTANT POSITION
NOVA SCOTIA LEGAL AID, HALIFAX NORTH OFFICE

The Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission delivers legal services in offices located throughout the Province, providing some level of help to all Nova Scotians with a focus on supporting those who are vulnerable and historically disadvantaged, including: Indigenous Peoples, African Nova Scotians, Immigrants and economically disadvantaged persons.

Position:  Family Support Assistant (FSA) position for our Halifax North Office on Agricola Street, Halifax. This is a 1 year contract position with the potential of permanency. The primary responsibility of the FSA will be to assist family practice lawyers with representation of family law clients.

Reporting to the Managing Lawyer and under the direction of Staff Lawyers, the FSA provides comprehensive administrative and secretarial support to the lawyer in the day-to-day conduct of clients’ legal affairs. The FSA will have responsibility for a wide range of assignments involving the day-to-day operations of the Nova Scotia Legal Aid Commission.

Salary Range:  NSLAC Clerical Pay Scale (CL); CL 14-1 to 22-5, plus benefits.

Responsibilities (includes but not limited to):

  • Effectively manage family clients’ applications and intake.
  • Obtain required information to complete draft affidavits, financial statements, and other required forms.
  • Manage, coordinate and ensure the smooth flow of work in a family Lawyer’s practice.
  • Provide legal assistant support as well as conduct preliminary research.
  • Prepare, issue, and arrange for the service of Subpoenas & track status of cases through Court.
  • Organize file materials and exhibits for trials and case/pre-trial/settlement conferences and prepare file for closure by lawyer.
  • Assist in Court with taking notes.
  • Prepare rough draft of Court Orders.
  • Any other additional projects and tasks as required

Requirements:

  • Graduate of a recognized post-secondary clerical certificate program or 5 years of equivalent work experience.
  • Ideally, 1 year of previous experience handling Family Law Cases in a law office and have a good working knowledge of legal terminology, legal research and court procedures.
  • Excellent PC literacy – Word, Excel, Outlook.
  • Excellent typing and communication skills, including attention to detail and accuracy and capacity to work under pressure of deadlines and multiple competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently, to take initiative, and to use judgment in matters of extreme confidentiality and sensitivity.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team setting.
  • Ability to meet the public and interact with judges, senior government officials, lawyers and agencies within government in a tactful, professional and courteous manner.
  • Commissioner of Oaths, or will have ability to meet this requirement within 90 days of commencing employment with NSLA.
